Understanding each separately allows you to make specific behavioral choices rather than relying on vague advice about “feeling good.”

Dopamine: The Motivation and Reward Signal

Dopamine is frequently described as the “pleasure chemical,” but this is inaccurate in an important way. Neuroscientist Kent Berridge’s landmark research distinguishes between “liking” (the experience of pleasure) and “wanting” (the anticipatory drive toward reward). Dopamine governs wanting, not liking. It is the signal of anticipated reward and the fuel for goal-directed behavior.
